Today was the day. The start of the foundations. In the end, the setting out (marking where the foundations will go) was done along with more site clearance. The real foundation digging starts tomorrow.

This was the first time we’ve seen our house laid out on the ground. It is slightly surreal — we’re so used to looking at the plans on paper and now the rooms are laid out in full scale in front of us.

Unfortunately, we had to take out some young birch trees and a bank with rowan trees to create the necessary space for the digger to do the foundations and for the drainage pipes. We’d hoped that we would be able to keep these trees. One lesson from today was that if doing this again, we would have laid out the plans early on in the design process. In this case, I don’t think it would have changed anything, but seeing the house on the plot shows it in a new light.

Anyway, it’s all very exciting! Luckily it was a beautiful, sunny evening and the three of us had a yummy meal by the fire.
